Need for Learning Outcomes in Early Childhood to build Future Leaders

With disruptive technology and artificial intelligence beating humans in this competitive world, introducing learning outcomes in early childhood can have bigger return on investment than almost any other educational intervention. Nobel laureate James J. Heckman has documented that early development of faculty improves the health, economic and social outcomes of children with lasting effects into adulthood.

Right at this juncture, the need to innovative learning methods is crucial as India continues to gain prominence in the global diaspora in the current century. Indian government is also pushing the agenda of skilling Indians to be market-ready.

Learning Outcomes is a practice that aims at monitoring a student’s performance and development periodically to enhance capabilities and create future leaders. The student’s all round development is measured with metrics and monitored consistently to bring about maximum impact through learning outcomes of every single child. The methodical framework assists in enhancing scores on an average by 10% to 15% of each individual student.

The Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley in his Budget 2017-18 emphasised on the need for measuring learning outcomes. The Union government is set to devise a method to measure learning outcomes of children at school level; emphasis will be given on science education and flexibility in curriculum to promote creativity through local innovative content.

Currently, an important measure is the in-depth and continual assessment of academic performance of each student in the campus. This helps to map the results of students in all spheres of learning and basis the analysis, the teachers evaluate and execute action plans to ensure that every child is taken to the next level of competency.

The assessing model for learning outcomes compares the current performance levels with academic performance levels and generates trend analysis, indicating either ‘increasing or decreasing’ trend.
Predicting the forthcoming assessments of a student is crucial to enable preventive action in the beginning. This trend helps to determine the target for each student, making target setting easier at all levels for educational achievements.

Tracking the academic performance of each student needs to be in various combinations at various levels like School-wise, Segment-wise, Subject-wise, Section-wise, Student-wise and Subject‐Teacher-wise.

The framework of learning outcomes is to create activities or lesson plans that would be able to bring out an expected rate of success as a result of that learning activity. Outcomes are measured in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning outcomes are achieved by implementing high benchmark in curriculum delivery and school operations. At Global Indian International School (GIIS) the entire curriculum has been developed in terms of learning outcomes. Whether it is the physical environment or the academic environment, the focus is towards achieving favourable Learning Outcomes. As a school we have an IDP ‘Individual development Plan’ for each student that also works on individual Learning outcomes.

To enhance teachers’ skills for classroom delivery and raising the benchmark for students teachers are put through rigorous training and mentorship. The core team starting from top management to the grade level co-coordinator’s, are exposed to the latest trends in education and innovative teaching-learning practices.

GIIS actively follows project-based and activity-based learning for problem-solving and high order thinking skills. Learning Outcomes is an essential process and analytical tool to develop future leaders.
