Oxford University Press Organises Capacity Building Programme For Foundational Teachers

Oxford University Press India (OUP), a department of the University of Oxford, conducted a workshop on the effective implementation of NCF 2023 for mathematics at the foundational and preparatory stages for teachers in Delhi. The new and revised edition of its flagship mathematics series ‘New Enjoying Mathematics’ was introduced during the workshop by OUP’s renowned author Ashalata Badami.

The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 aligned mathematics course uses an activity-oriented approach, aimed to eliminate math phobia and enhance cognitive, creative, and physical development in students.

Attended by over 250 primary school teachers in New Delhi, the workshop introduced them to experiential learning tools for mathematics endorsed by NEP 2020 and outlined in NCF 2023.

Badami demonstrated the ELPS method or ‘Experience with concrete objects, language, picture, symbol’ method for concept-building. She proposed a new approach to problem-solving using simple bar diagrams and suggested games like Mastermind and Blind Tic-Tac-Toe to enhance logical thinking.

Aashalata Badami, who has over 30 years of experience in designing maths programmes and training teachers to implement them successfully said, “This revision focuses on current trends in maths education, addressing the immediate context of a child’s world while incorporating 21st-century skills such as communication, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.”

It is pertinent to mention that OUP has earlier collaborated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to develop a research-based capacity-building programme called Think–Share–Learn–Practice (TSLP) through which teachers gain skills in curriculum design and teaching practices based on experiential learning which is rooted in the Indian ethos.

Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford. It further affirms the University's objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.
