Things To Consider While Building International Law Career

Every year thousands of Indian students opt to study Law abroad and travel to countries like the UK, USA, Australia, Canada or UAE for the same. These students largely fall into two main categories, students who already have a Law degree from India and are seeking to study LLM abroad or students who are looking for a three-year undergraduate LLB degree from a foreign university.

But in both cases, the most difficult task comes later, when these students go into the ‘real world’ to build a career in International Law. There are some very simple yet important things which can help students when building an international law career. The top 5 tips are as follows:

Research

There are different types of international law careers, focusing on different areas and in different regions of the world. Therefore, careful research is essential, so that the students can have all the information needed to maximise opportunities at hand. There are many useful online sources that could be consulted for more help and information.

Network and use LinkedIn

It can really help to build up a network of those who are already pursuing an international legal career, to enhance one’s understanding of the different opportunities. LinkedIn is a fantastic resource to connect with lawyers around the world who may be working in areas of law or countries that are of interest to the students and can be of really great help when needed.

Be commercially aware

Most international opportunities relate to business-focussed areas of Law. In such areas, an understanding of international business issues, as well as Law, is important, so it's better to be updated on the latest business issues worldwide and consider how these link to one’s legal expertise.

Be flexible and open-minded

Strong legal skills and understanding are in demand across the world. Sometimes opportunities may present themselves in countries or regions that the student hasn’t previously considered. It is now common for many lawyers to work in a variety of jurisdictions and even qualify in multiple countries. The more international understanding and experience they gain, the more opportunities they will have in the future.

Gain an international qualification

Gaining an international legal qualification is a great first step toward developing an international law career. Doing so will provide the students with many new insights and enhanced understanding of law in the international context. The more exposure, the better experience and learning.
