Teaching Students To Respect Other’s Culture, Practices & Traditions

Schools have the responsibility to sensitise the students about diversity and inclusiveness they should teach them to respect other’s cultures, practices and traditions to eliminate discrimination and certain biases, believes Prof SV Ramana Rao, Director, Siva Sivani Institute of Management.

While speaking at Future Of Management Education Conclave 2023, Prof Nagarajan Ramamoorthy, Director, IIM Amritsar said, "Diversity is a level playing field for everyone, equal opportunity and fair treatment for everyone."

Nasir Shaikh, CEO, Lexicon Group of Institutes and Dr Manasa Nagabhushanam, Director, Ramaiah Institute of Management criticised the organisations and said that they are not inclusive nor trying to bring equity. Conscious efforts are needed to sensitise students about the importance of Diversity and Inclusiveness, they added.  

"B-Schools are educating future leaders, without inculcating diversity in the minds of students they will not be able to manage it in the future," said Dr Noor Firdoos Jahan, Professor & Head, Department of Marketing, RV Institute of Management.

She highlighted the importance of cultural clubs in schools in bringing inclusiveness and said, “In clubs, with learning different cultures students are understanding how to bring unity with all the differences they have.”

On the need to have a dialogue between corporates and institutes, Rao said, “There must be a connection with the corporate, and we should inform them about the diversity we have on the campuses.”

“It is not very difficult to inculcate in the minds of students of today and tomorrow, we should be very careful while communicating with them as a teacher and a guide, we don’t make any loose comments,” he added.
