The institutes that have been named as the institutes of eminence by the government will be receiving special funding and complete autonomy in an attempt to raise their standards as world-class institutions in the coming years. “The #instituteofEminence are important for the country. We have 800 universities, but a single university in top 100 or even 200 in the world ranking. Today’s decision will help achieve this” Mr. Javadekar tweeted.
The list contains the name of Jio Institute which has not even been launched yet. The government had received a ton of questions on the inclusion of such an institution in the list to which the answer was that the cut under the Greenfield category for new or proposed institutions. On Monday many tagged Education Minister on Twitter in their tweet asking about the Jio institute’s location and other details. According to officials, 11 such institutions had applied for the Institute of Eminence and Jio was selected from among them, as per the reports of NDTV.
The institutes have been selected by an empowered expert committee (EEC), headed by N. Gopalaswami set up by the University Grants Commission under the UGC (World Class Institutions Deemed To Be Universities) Regulations, 2016. Any institution selected has 10 years to make it to top 500 ranking of world universities.
So far nothing has is known about Jio Institute’s chancellor, vice chancellor and the other team members with “very high qualifications”
