Teachers March Against Non-Implementation Of 7th Pay Commission

Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), along with other teacher unions were seen shouting slogans outside University Grant Commission’s office while protesting against proposed fee hike of the college students which will eventually pay for increment in salaries of central government teachers. 

The teachers in protest are demanding the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission but not at the cost students’ fee hike. 

Several teacher associations like those of Jamia Millia Teachers Association and Jawaharlal Nehru Teachers Body took part in the protest. According to the teacher’s delegation, the government wants to indirectly promote the privatization of Education where students will be paying an exorbitant fee from the next academic session. 

Former DUTA head, Nandita Narain in told BWEducation, “Where will the middle-class students go if the new fee hike is implemented. University encouraging the model of self – financing will hamper teaching as a profession.” “We are not commercial bodies that can generate our own income,” she added. 

DUTA is also demanding of regularization of all 4,500 ad-hoc teachers working in various colleges and say that it should abolish the practice of contractual teachers. In the same regards, Teachers have submitted an official representation to the UGC earlier and are now waiting for solutions on the several issues.   

All India College and Universities Teachers’ Federation has also joined the protest. Going forward, DUTA has announced, that if their demands are not met they will conduct a university level strike from March 19 to 23. The student community is bound to suffer as exams are scheduled just around the corner. Expressing concern for the student community, Narain added, “This protest is for the common man’s benefit because ultimately the proposed fee hike will affect them directly.”
