Section 144 Imposed In Okhla; Jamia Asks Teachers, Students Not To Assemble

Jamia Millia Islamia has instructed its teachers and students not to assemble around and in the campus as police has imposed restrictions as per section 144 of the CrPC in whole Okhla region.

In a notice issued on 26 September, the Chief Proctor of the university stated the SHO of the Jamia Nagar Police Station has informed that the restrictions have been laid since September 19 as information was gathered that some groups or people may involve in activities detrimental to the maintenance of law & order and peace.

The SHO further stated that the restrictions would be in place in the whole Okhla (Jamia Nagar) region till November 17, the notice further added.

The police have, nonetheless, refused that the order is in relation to the in-progress action against the Popular Front of India (PFI).

Section 144 of the CrPC restricts the assembly of four or more people in any region. Violation of the same is punishable under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

The notice came one day after Jamia's teachers declared a peaceful protest march.
