The Lifeness Science Institute (LSI) held a seminar in Mumbai to discuss the Indian Council of Medical Research's new Dietary Guidelines for 2024, marking the first revision in 13 years. The guidelines aim to meet nutrient requirements and combat non-communicable diseases. Experts from academia, dietitians, nutritionists and industry leaders discussed the changes and dietary restrictions.
The 17 guidelines, issued for different age groups, emphasise the significance of physical activity, nutrient intake, a diverse diet, good food choices, use of supplements and oils in regular diets to enhance overall health and well-being.
The event started with a conversation between Dr B Sesikeran (Former Director, NIN) and Dr Sudershan Rao (Chairman, Scientific Panel on Food Additives at FSSAI), as they shared their scientific perspectives on EAR, RDA and food additives. They also rationalised and explained the guidelines laid out by ICMR.
The event concluded with a panel discussion on the applicability of dietary guidelines across India. LSI is hosting the upcoming international conference 'VishwaSwasthyam - 2025' on the 10th and 11th of January 2025 in Mumbai. The conference, titled "Metabolic Health: Protect the Present and Safeguard the Future," will be chaired by Dr B Sesikeran and Gopal Sharma.
