Future Of School Education

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic and the launch of National Education Policy, 2020, India’s education sector has been constantly evolving and moulding itself to address the various challenges and keep up with the current needs. During the lockdown, schools shifted to online or hybrid models of learning in order to continue providing education to students while keeping them safe. Some of the changes we have seen in education during the pandemic will continue into the near future as well, as many schools have embraced the benefits of these approaches. Technology will continue to play a vital part, with advancements like online learning platforms and gamification aiding the learning process.

Following are some of the trends we will witness in school education:

Continued growth in blended and online learning

Blended and online learning are likely to continue to grow in popularity in the coming years, as more schools embrace the benefits they offer, such as greater flexibility or convenience in terms of when and where students can learn. In a blended learning model, instruction occurs both in the classroom and through online platforms. This is an effective way to enhance the traditional classroom experience by providing additional resources and opportunities for students to engage with the material. One of the key benefits of blended and online learning is that it they allow students to learn at their own pace, which can be particularly helpful for those who need more time to understand the material. They can also be useful tools for teachers in augmenting their pedagogy, as they facilitate the use of a variety of teaching methods and resources to better meet the needs of their students.

Immersive Learning

Immersive learning by utilizing augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology will continue to see a rise. By using AR and VR, students can be transported into virtual environments that replicate real-world scenarios which can help them better understand and retain new information. Immersive learning can be highly engaging and interactive, which can help keep students motivated and focused on the lesson. Additionally, because students are fully immersed in the virtual environment, there are fewer distractions and they can be more focused on the learning process. This can be especially effective for hands-on, experiential learning as it allows students to interact with virtual objects and environments in a way that is similar to how they would in the real world.

Simulation

Schools are also likely to take the help of simulation to make learning more enjoyable as it allows students to apply what they have learned in a realistic context. Simulation allows students to experience and practice real-life situations in a virtual or simulated environment. This can help students to develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities.

Gamified Learning

Gamified learning blends traditional learning practices with game-like elements and principles to engage and motivate learners. It can be an effective way to make learning more interactive and enjoyable, as well as to increase student motivation and retention. Some of the elements that are often used in gamified learning include points, badges, leaderboards, and rewards. The desire to lead the scoreboards incentivizes students to learn and practice while having fun. It can be especially useful for subjects that may be perceived as dry or boring, as it can make the learning experience more engaging and immersive.

Micro-Learning

The micro-learning approach involves delivering educational content in small, focused increments. It is designed to be easily digestible and to allow learners to focus on one concept or skill at a time, making it easier to retain information and apply it in practice. Microlearning can be delivered in a variety of formats, including videos, articles, quizzes and interactive games. It is often used as a way to reinforce classroom learning and facilitate retention over time through the use of spaced repetition, which involves regularly revisiting and reviewing the material at intervals. This approach can be particularly effective for learners who learn more effectively in small increments rather than in longer, more intensive sessions.

Soft Skills Training

In line with the progressive thought process of the National Education Policy, 2020, there will be an increased focus on soft skills training which will help children hone crucial skills that they will eventually require in the future. Sharpening soft skills, such as communication, public speaking, teamwork, adaptability and time management, will prepare students for real-world scenarios like job interviews and maintaining professional relationships.

Ensuring that all students have access to quality education and that they are able to achieve positive learning outcomes, is crucial for the development of a well-educated and skilled society. These education trends will help schools to step up to the demands of parents who are looking beyond marks and also emphasising building confidence and crucial critical skills.
