Higher Education and Management & Business Education, in particular, is facing an unprecedented crisis. Business schools and learned societies are facing a number of pressing short‐term problems that potentially threaten their existence. The impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic has meant stopping classroom teaching and switching online. For business academics, this has been a critical issue because of the considerably greater volume of students who study business both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels than other disciplines and due to the expected value in business degrees which often carry higher fees than other subjects.
To have a deeper insight on this subject, BW Education hosted another episode of its Wednesday Wisdom Webinar Series on “Future of Management Education”. The special guest who graced the discussion with various insightful informations was Dr Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director, IIM Sambalpur. The session was hosted by Dr Annurag Batra, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, BW Businessworld & exchange4media Group.
Talking about the challenges faced in the last few months of COVID-19, Dr Jaiswal said, “It was a very challenging time because it was a major disruption. We never thought things will change like this but fortunately, at IIM Sambalpur, we were ready with a digital infrastructure. We wanted our entire education system to be digitally enabled. We had prepared all the classrooms and labs with digital boards and smart class.”
Elaborating about the admissions, Dr Jaiswal informed, “We were the first to hold the online procuring exam. That was a first and very exciting experience because students were taking exams sitting at their homes. Students also did their summer vacation projects and assignments online.” He further added, “We planned for the whole year and we restructured our course curriculum, not in terms of the actual content but in terms of delivery models.”
Dr Jaiswal stressed on the importance of three ‘I’ in the arena of management. He affirmed, “Future of management is based on three I and these three I are Innovation, Integrity and Inclusiveness.”
Commenting on the placements, Dr Jaiswal asserted, “The COVID has not impacted the B-School placement because the kind of job that has been affected are hospitality sector, tourism etc and not many of our MBA go there.”
