The rapid growth of the tourism and travel industry in the past decade had created an increasing demand for manpower in hotels, restaurants, airlines etc.
The tourism and hospitality industry in India has significant potential as the country has variety in ecology, rich cultural and historical heritage, and terrains that attract a lot of tourists. Also, the rise in the Indian middle class is supporting the growth of domestic and outbound tourism. Out of the total employment generated in the country in 2017, 8 per cent was in the travel & tourism sector amounting to the employment to around 41.6 million people in 2017. The numbers are expected to increase by 2 per cent annum and by 2028 there would around 52.3 million jobs in the industry. To meet the demand, international hotel chains presence is increasing. These hotel chains would have a share of around 47 per cent share in the Tourism & Hospitality sector by 2020 and 50 per cent by 2022.
The Indian economy is growing and by 2025 would become the world’s third-largest economy. And the services sector by contributing 51 per cent of the GDP is the largest component of the Indian economy. According to a data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), the hotel and tourism sector attracted around US$ 11.39 billion of FDI during the period April 2000-June 2018.
Thus, the hospitality industry is the place to be if you have the desired skill and want. By getting a degree related to this industry one can make a career in restaurant management / fast food joint management, club management/recreation and health centre management, cruise ship management, institutional and industrial catering, airline catering and cabin services, hotel and catering institute, hotel and tourism associations, catering departments in banks and insurance houses, Government-owned catering departments (railway, armed forces, ministerial conventions etc), food and beverage production industries, conventions centres, ministries of tourism, wellness centres, event management, theatre venues, theme parks, real estate management companies, and manufacturers and suppliers of hospitality equipment among many other such options.
A degree in Hotel Management is the basic requirement to enter the hospitality industry. The courses in hospitality provide knowledge about sales and marketing, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Property Management, Hotel and Catering Law, Entrepreneurship Development with a focus on Tourism Studies. Skills Required
One should have a good organizational background, interpersonal skills, self-discipline, excellent communication skills. She/he must be co-operative, polite, and should have the patience to deal with criticism even when she/he is right.
Remuneration
It depends on the employer, institute and skills. A person coming out of the top institute can earn a starting salary of around Rs 20,000 or more. Students with a diploma or certificate programmes can get salary between Rs 9000 and Rs 15000 per month. The growth depends on the performance of the individual and the skill sets she/he possesses. The scope is good with the chance of getting job offers from abroad also.
