96-Year-Old Passes Kerala Literacy Test, Scores 98/100 Marks

A true learner always looks for gaining knowledge at any age. This saying goes best for 96-year-old Karthiyani Amma who has cleared a test under Kerala’s literacy programme with a whopping percentage. Oldest student among her classmates, Amma scored 98 out of 100 marks in the ‘Aksharalaksham’ literacy programme. In the exam, reading, writing and mathematical skills were tested.

About 42,993 candidates have cleared the test this year, as per news agency ANI. Amma hails from Alappuzha, Cheppad and got 38 marks out of the total of 40 in writing and full marks in the other two.

Karthiyani had never been to school as she was working as a domestic help and a cleaning staff. Her daughter Amminiamma, 51, inspired her mother to join the classes. Amminiamma who is also a school dropout managed to clear the examination with was equivalent to a tenth standard course. She also aims at continuing her studies further.

As per reports, a function is scheduled at Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday where Karthyayani will be receiving a merit certificate from the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Karthiyani caught the attention on social media when Anand Mahindra, shared her picture of attending the examination this year.

The total pass percentage of the examination remained high at 99.084 per cent. There were 37,166 women of the total candidates who cleared the first phase of the examination. ( source: ANI and Indian Express)
