Things Technology Has Enabled For Better Learning Outcomes

The covid pandemic has accentuated the use of technology in teaching and learning. Technology has empowered students in many ways. The availability of learning material on the Learning Management System (LMS) has empowered students to do self-study and prepare before class. The availability of e-books, journals and videos on LMS has given a huge advantage to students. In fact, that has changed the dynamics of class, classroom should mainly be used for discussion and problem solving and doubt clearing rather than dissemination of knowledge by faculty. The idea of the flipped classroom is an old one but technology has enabled students to access learning material at a click of a button and prepare well for the class.

Messaging on Learning Management System (LMS) and MS Teams have increased the access of faculty members beyond the classroom which is helping students and leading to better learning outcomes.

Newer technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality have got usage in terms of watching places and industries without going to those places. A lot of complex learning material can be explained through visuals in augmented and virtual reality. It will certainly improve students’ understanding and improve learning outcomes.

The use of AI and Machine Learning in the online learning material will make learning customised to each student. It will be a boon for students if they require extra time to master the concepts. AI will not give a higher level of material till the student masters the basic level concepts. We will see the increasing use of AI and Machine learning in learning material in years to come.

The use of videos and simulations has given a different pedagogical flavour while teaching in schools and colleges. Learners who are visually oriented find the videos more classes and learning more engaging. Similarly, Simulations bring the practical application of the theory and concepts which have been taught in the classes. To make learning more meaningful, contextual and application-oriented, simulations help the student learn better.

Technological innovations will redefine the classroom experience. There is no substitute for peer learning and faculty-student interaction in face-to-face mode. But empowering students through technological innovations will create better learning outcomes. The covid pandemic has certainly increased the usage of technology in teaching and learning. It will be increasingly used to augment the face-to-face mode of learning for better outcomes. Technology has enabled students and educational institutions to seek and access better reading and educational material from around the world.
