Major Boost For Central, State And Deemed Universities

In effort to boost education initiatives the government has announced to grant more autonomy 60 institutions that are considered to be better performing. These include central and state universities, deemed universities and colleges across the country. 

Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar further explained that the 60 institutions include: 52 Universities i.e. 5 central universities, 21 state universities, 24 deemed universities, and 2 private universities. He added that these universities will remain within the ambit of University Grants Commission. However they will be allowed to start new courses, skill development courses, research parks, off campus centres and any other new academic programs. These institutions can also hire foreign faculty, enrol foreign students and offer competitive salaries to the faculty. 

Two central universities — Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Hyderabad — are in the top category, along with state universities such as Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Algappa University, Karaikudi, and Nalsar University of Law, Telangana, under the “graded autonomy” scheme. The private universities in the list include O P Jindal Global University, Sonipat, and Pandit Deen Dayal Petroleum University, Gujarat.
