PM's Research Fellowship offered to only 135 out of 1000 candidates

The Prime Minister Research Fellowship scheme had been started for a period of seven years, starting 2018-19 under which, those students, who have completed, or are in the final year of B. Tech or integrated M. Tech or M.Sc. in science and technology streams from IISc/IITs/NITs/IISERs/IIITs, with at least 8.0 CGPA will be offered direct admission in Ph. D programme in the IITs/IISc after going through the selection process. The scheme was introduced by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar in February 2018 in order to convert brain drain into brain gain. According to recent reports, the Prime Minister Research Fellowship Scheme is to be offered to only 135 students out of 1000 such positions. The reason behind the same is that, as per the data released by IIT Hyderabad, out of 2,035 applicants interviewed across 18 disciplines, about 135 have been offered direct admission to PhD programmes in IISc and IITs in Mumbai, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, as per the reports of Indian Express.

Under this scheme, a research grant of Rs.2 Lakh will also be provided to the fellows for a period of five years to cover their foreign travel expenses for presenting research papers at international conferences and seminars.
