OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has announced a partnership with York University of Canada for higher education opportunities for students of India. The collaboration is aimed at creating opportunities for Indian students and researchers.
JGU is hosting York University in India. President and Vice Chancellor of York University, Prof Rhonda Lenton has visited India to promote the objective of India- Canada Higher Education partnership. Press Meet in Delhi on 15 September marked the inaugural stop of her five-city tour.
Through this collaboration, both universities are planning comprehensive and strategic educational opportunities for students of both countries. There will be various opportunities including study abroad programs, student exchange programs, entrepreneurial trips and scholarships for students.
Prof Lenton said, “York is proud to invest in several critical initiatives that will strengthen our ties with India and create mutually beneficial opportunities for our talented students and researchers, including an India Immersion Programme with O.P. Jindal Global University as it's important for Canadian students to understand India, it's growth story and the impact of India on the world. As well as a Pan-India entrepreneurship boot camp that will expose talented students to the world's largest business and consumer market; and the launch of a new global research seed fund that will invest in global research collaborations with leading universities, industries, government agencies and NGOs in priority countries such as India.”
This partnership between York University and JGU strives to fulfil few objectives. Advancing the vision of New Education Policy 2020 by promoting internationalisation, research and collaboration is one of the objectives of this partnership. Other objectives include nation and institution-building, knowledge creation and publication, and creation of opportunities for Indian students to pursue world-class education in Canada at York University itself.
“There are three important policy level impetus that has happened in India. One is the need to promote research opportunities for collaboration. Second is how Indian institutions can be positioned towards improving their rankings in international rankings and other benchmarks. Third is the policy related to the institution of eminence. All three are advancing the idea of how Indian institutions can collaborate with international universities in research so that scholarship publications can be done,” said Prof C Raj Kumar, President and Vice-Chancellor, JGU.
Prof Kumar expressed his excitement about the plan to establish dual degree opportunities, enabling students from India and Jindal to commence their degree programs in India and subsequently pursue the remainder of their studies leading to an additional degree. “Students from India and Jindal can spend part of their degree program here in India and then pursue the rest of their studies leading to another degree so that together at the end of their learning cycle they will be able to get degrees from both institutions. This will require course mapping and curriculum development at some level but this is something which we are very excited about and we intend to do it,” he said.
The dual degree programme is expected to start in the next couple of years for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This programme will offer various courses including arts, science, business and design.
