Union HRD Minister Launches National Digital Library
Union Human Resource Minister Prakash Javadekar launched the National Digital Library on Tuesday. The objective behind the same is to integrate several national and international libraries in one single web portal.
The National digital library has been built by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur as a project given to it by the HRD Ministry. A beta version of the portal was launched last year and is being used by millions of users already since, but an official announcement was made on Tuesday. Earlier the digital library was open only to schools and other educational institutions, but now it is accessible to anybody who has a curiosity to learn. It will have 1.7 crore books in 200 languages. Moreover, the books will be available in the form of text as well as audiobooks. The best part about the digital library is, it is free of cost as told by the HRD Minister during the official launch. Moreover, it will also be useful for the students preparing for competitive exams. "So far, 35 lakh users have registered for it but our aim is that in a year's time, the number goes up to 3 crores", said Javadekar, according to The Hindu.
Users can register for the National Digital Library for free from the Google Play store.
