Bridging India's Financial Literacy Gap: StockGro CEO Ajay Lakhotia on Revolutionising Stock Market Education

In this exclusive interview with BW Education Ajay Lakhotia, the Founder and CEO of StockGro, we delve into the pressing challenges within India's stock market education landscape and the innovative solutions his platform offers to bridge the financial literacy gap. Lokhotia highlights the absence of practical guidance in traditional education systems and the misguided expectations that often lead to disillusionment among retail investors. He emphasises the importance of imparting financial knowledge early, on and how StockGro's approach leverages interactive and experiential learning methods to engage and educate the youth and new investors. Edited excerpts from the interview.

What are the most significant challenges you've observed in stock market education in India, and how do these challenges compare to global trends?

When it comes to stock market and financial education in our country, there is a notable absence of guidance within our educational system. Schools, colleges, and even business schools fail to impart knowledge about investing. Even professionals like chartered accountants and CFAs understand the theoretical aspects but struggle with the practicalities of real-time stock market investment. This presents a major challenge. Many individuals enter the stock market with unrealistic exp ectations of quick and substantial returns. This desire for instant gratification has led to a misconception about stock market investing, often perpetuated by those who provide stock tips and advice.

This practice erodes trust in the stock market when people inevitably lose money due to a lack of understanding. It's essential to recognise that the Indian stock market is substantial, ranked 8th globally and cannot be navigated solely through stock tips. Retail investors need to learn how to invest wisely with a long-term perspective. To address these issues, we've established a platform that provides experiential learning opportunities to help individuals understand and navigate various asset classes, not just stocks. We've condensed complex financial concepts into bite-sized content to cater to different learning paces and intellectual levels, making learning accessible to all.

How does StockGro contribute to bridging the financial literacy gap among the Indian population, especially the youth and new investors?

We've tailored our approach to suit the needs of today's millennials, who often have short attention spans. Instead of presenting lengthy content, we've condensed it into bite-sized portions for quick comprehension. Finance is a subject best learned through interaction with a community. People don't just read about it; they learn by discussing it with friends, family and experts.

On StockGro, we've created a vibrant community of educators, fund managers and finance enthusiasts who impart knowledge to the new generation. Users can ask questions, seek advice and engage in discussions about market trends and strategies.

To further enhance learning, we offer a virtual platform where users can simulate stock market trading without using real money. This hands-on experience helps users overcome their fear of investing and gain real-world insights.

What is your opinion on introducing financial education in schools, and what changes do you foresee in a couple of years if it is implemented?

Introducing financial education in schools is crucial. Financial literacy is a life skill, akin to understanding medicine or first aid. Students in schools and colleges are at an ideal stage to absorb financial knowledge when they are curious and eager to learn. Making financial education interesting is equally important. It should not be a traditional course but should mimic the dynamics of a live market. By introducing financial education early, we can equip students with essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Could you explain how StockGro incorporates interactive and experiential learning methods to make stock market education more engaging and effective?

Experiential learning on StockGro provides users with a virtual portfolio to buy and sell stocks without using real money. This virtual environment allows users to experience how a portfolio is built and understand the potential returns they could generate within specific timeframes. Users can also compare their virtual portfolios with those of their friends, fostering healthy competition and learning. It's a practical way for users to learn about investing in real-time conditions.

Technology is rapidly evolving, impacting various industries. How has technology played a pivotal role in revolutionising the delivery of stock market education?

The financial and banking sectors are at the forefront of adopting technological advancements due to the high volume of transactions and stringent security requirements. These industries are quick to embrace new technologies to enhance user experiences and streamline operations. Staying relevant means transitioning from older technology stacks to newer, more efficient ones. This evolution ensures that users have access to faster and better services.

The internet and social media can disseminate misinformation about personal finance. What advice do you have for individuals to identify credible sources for investing and finance?

We are addressing this issue through StockGro by providing transparency in portfolio sharing. Users can audit and verify the portfolios of others on the platform. This transparency allows individuals to gauge the credibility of those offering investment advice. In today's environment, where misinformation is prevalent, it's essential to rely on trusted sources and verify information before making financial decisions.
